NST : UniKL blank MBPJ to reach semis
BUKIT JALIL: Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) ended a two-year jinx in the P. Alagendra Cup by reaching the semi-finals at the National Hockey Stadium on Thursday.
Arul Selvaraj’s side were unstoppable in their 6-0 thrashing of Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya Tigers (MBPJ) in the quarterfinals.
Hafiz Zainol (9th and 18th minutes), Izwan Firdaus Ahmad Tajudddin (23rd and 48th), Nazmi Farizal Jazlan (54th) and Faridzul Afiq Mohd (59th) were the scorers.
They were quarter-finallists in the previous two editions.
The win has placed UniKL closer to realising their hopes of a first ever Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) title since their debut in 2011.
UniKL have now scored a massive 16 goals in two matches in the tournament.
On Wednesday, they hammered Selangor 10-0 in the first round.
“We did not play a high level game in the first quarter (of the match) but I am satisfied with our overall performance today," said Arul.
“It was a tougher match compared to Selangor.
"With two wins in a row, I consider Saturday’s semi-finals as the main match in this tournament.
"Defender Kevin Lim did not play today as his hockey stick luggage did not arrive at the airport on Wednesday and we are sorting this out.
"Glenn Turner is scheduled to join us on Saturday and I am happy with the number of foreign players we have on board for the semifinals."
UniKL will play Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) or Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Both teams are scheduled to play their quarterfinals match encounter later tonight.
In another last eight match, Terengganu Hockey Club hammered UiTM 9-0 with Faizal Saari scoring five goals.
