Star : Mutiara Impian in dazzling form
SMK Mutiara Impian reaped a golden harvest of four out of six titles at the annual TNB-Penang State Hockey Association challenge.
They powered their way to the Men's Open and Boys’ Under-14 titles at the event held at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) artificial turf stadium.
The girls, not to be outdone, defended the Women's Open crown before adding the Girls’ Under-14 title as well.
SMK Mutiara Impian chief hockey coach Leo Vincey was not surprised by the title haul.
“There were numerous formidable rivals in that category.
“Teams like the air force outfit of TUDM Rajawali and Old Frees Association (OFA) are quite experienced.
“They are also powered by former and present national players," he said.
The odds were against Mutiara Impian when they faced OFA in the Men’s Open final.
OFA had the services of former national player Muhammad Izzat Mohd Rahim and current national ace Irwan Firdaus Ahmad.
However, the Mutiara Impian outfit called ‘MI Young Boys’ managed to come out on top in a ding dong battle, counting on their youthful energy to outlast the experience of their rival.
Mutiara Impian drew first blood in the third minute with Muhammad Alif Farhan making his penalty corner count.
OFA instantly hit back with an equaliser through Asrul Azrin Omar.
The MI Young Boys were then left trailing after OFA’s Irwan Firdaus drilled home his penalty corner effort in the 12th minute.
But they drew level through Muhammad Faris Hassan just four minutes later.
Then in the 19th minute. they regained their lead through Muhammad Saiful to make it 3-2.
OFA refused to throw in the towel and again drew level with an Ahmad Hasbi Abdul Latib field goal in the 32nd minute.
With the scoreline tied at 3-3, Mutiara Impian skipper Muhammad Hafizzuddin Zaidi fired home a brace.
He finished off a penalty corner in the 47th minute before converting a penalty stroke just two minutes later for his team to troop out 5-3 winners.
Earlier, the Mutiara Impian Under-14 boys edged SM Sains Tun Syed Sheh Shahabuddin 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 deadlock at full time.
Mutiara Impian kept their Women's Open crown by beating Penang Juniors 4-0.
Meanwhile, the Under-14 girls handed St George’s Girls School a 10-0 whopping.
