NST : THT aim to be third time lucky

KUALA LUMPUR: Terengganu Hockey Team (THT) coach Sarjit Singh does not want to be third time unlucky, as he prepares his team for the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) Premier Division title deciding match against Kuala Lumpur Hockey Club (KLHC) at the KLHA Stadium in Pantai on Friday.

THT had lost the Charity Shield and the Alagendra Cup to KLHC on penalty shootouts.

Sarjit’s side need only a draw on Friday as they lead the standings with 21 points, one more than second-place KLHC.

"We have yet to lose a match this season (six wins and three draws) and we hope to defend our unbeaten run tomorrow for the title,” said Sarjit.

"I do not want to be third time unlucky after losing to KLHC in the Charity Shield and the Alagendra Cup via shootouts.”

The match could be decided on penalty corners as both teams have world class drag-flickers in Argentine Gonzalo Peillat and South Korean Jang Jong-hyun.

Peillat, who represents THT, is the league’s leading scorer with 13 goals, while KLHC’s Jong-hyun has netted 10 times.

"Our penalty corner conversion rate has been excellent and this is the main reason were are unbeaten.

“But we cannot just rely on penalty corners tomorrow. We need to take our chances from open play,” Sarjit added.

KLHC coach Lim Chiow Chuan said: "The players know what is at stake. We have to be intelligent in defence as THT are deadly in penalty corners.”

“The plan is not to concede soft penalty corners and to play a patient game.

“Many wrote us off when we lost to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and drew with Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) in the league.

“However, the team showed guts and determination by winning the other matches.

"It’s down to this match, and we will not give up our title without a fight,” said Chiow Chuan.
