NST : Thunderbolts expected to dominate JHL

KUALA LUMPUR: Teams under Thunderbolts, a Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) development programme which started in 2007, are expected to dominate next month’s Junior Hockey League (JHL).

Last year, TNB Cup semi-finals were made up of teams from Thunderbolts. However, it was Petaling Jaya City Council (PJCC) who won the league title.

As for the upcoming campaign, Thunderbolts, will sponsor Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI), Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), Anderson of Ipoh and Pahang Hockey Academy.

All four teams are favourites to win titles in the JHL. Division One starts on March 7, while the 20-team Division Two will begin on March 28.

Teams in Division One this year are SSTMI, BJSS, Anderson, Pahang, PJCC Tigers, Olak, MBMB Warriors, SSMS Resilient, Datuk Bentara Titanium and SSTMI Juniors.

TNB chief coach Nor Saiful Zaini said teams from Thunderbolts have been playing a huge role in producing players for the national senior and junior sides.

"We will continue with our development programme as we want to produce players with talent.

"Most in the national development squad are from our Thunderbolts programme," said Nor Saiful.

Nor Saiful said several former players from Thunderbolts made an impression in the recent Malaysia Hockey League.

"They were subsequently called up to join the national development squad," he added.
