NST : UiTM to prepare early for next season's top-tier challenge

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) coach K. Gobinathan will give his full commitment to prepare his team for next season’s Malaysian Hockey League Premier Division.

The university side ended their recent season unbeaten with victories in the Division One competition and the President’s Cup.

“I will likely retain the 15 core players, comprising university students, from this year’s squad for the Premier Division next season.

“We will start preparing early for the challenge.

“I could not give my full commitment this year as I was also involved with Maybank (in the Premier Division).

Gobinathan, who has also coached Bangladesh, said the standard in Division One was unsatisfactory this year.

"Overall, the standard of play in Division One was much lower compared to the Premier Division.

“I did not see any player with potential.

"But still, it served its purpose of giving a break to rising players just that no one took the opportunity to make a big impact," Gobinathan added.

Azwar Rahman was UiTM’s top scorer with nine goals, while teammate Nor Aqmal Gaffar netted seven.

Kedah's Nur Rahul Hrsikesa emerged as the overall top scorer with 13 goals.
