Star : Defending champs Perak fail to break down resilient Johor

Favourites Perak suffered a minor setback in the National Under-16 boys hockey tournament.

The defending champions could have emerged as Group A winners with a win over Johor.

But Perak, who notched three straight wins couldn’t break down a resilient Johor side and were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw at the National Hockey Stadium, Bukit Jalil, yesterday.

The result means both Perak and Johor qualify for the second round.

But Johor, who have seven points from three matches, can pip Perak to the top spot if they beat Perlis by more than two goals today.

Perlis, meanwhile, picked up their first win in the competition by edging Sarawak 1-0 following a field goal by Mughni Kamal in the 25th minute.

In the girls’ event, Terengganu grabbed the top spot in Group C after edging Perak 2-1, eliminating the latter in the process as well.

Perak had taken the lead in the 15th minute through a field goal by Siti Anis Uzma.

But Terengganu equalised through Siti Nur Hanisah’s penalty corner conversion in the 39th minute.

The 15-year-old then scored the winner eight minutes from time through another penalty corner effort.

The win means Terengganu finish with five points and they just only pip Johor to the top spot by goal difference.

Johor who also had five points, picked up a crucial win by beating Selangor 2-1.

In Group A, favourites Kuala Lumpur bounced back from a 2-2 draw against Pahang by whipping Perlis 4-0.
