Former sport star appeals to public for help

PENANG: Rajendran Balagurusamy was a popular athlete in the 1970s, having represented Penang in three different sports.

Popularly known as Uncle Bob in the hockey fraternity, he represented the state in rugby (1968-69), football (1968-70) and later hockey.

He played hockey for the country in two Sea Games, winning a gold in 1971 in Kuala Lumpur and a silver in 1973 in Singapore.

Rajendran missed the boat for the 1972 Munich Olympic and left the national hockey team just before the 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

Sadly early last year, the 69-year-old former Penang Island Municipal Council worker was diagnosed with cancer in his right thigh, and later in his lungs.

Rajendran’s cancer treatment is expected to cost more than RM53,000, and he has already spent RM21,000 of his savings on visits to hospitals.

The National Athletes Charity Foundation (Yakeb) has pledged RM20,000 to help him.

Recently, Penang State Hockey Association (PSHA) committee members raised some money among themselves for Rajendran.

Among those who visited Rajendran at his home were PSHA president Datuk Joseph Kow, deputy president S. Sanjilatheeban, vice presidents Ranjit Singh and V. Vangamani, secretary V. Jayanandan and committee member Parkas Singh. Also present was Kuala Lumpur HA secretary V. Rajamanickam.

Rajendran has appealed to the public for help in his cancer treatment. For those who wish to contribute, his details are: Rajendran S. Balagurusamy, Maybank account 157036597831, and telephone number: 016-4461929.
