MMAIL : Penang to build RM7.5m hockey stadium

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 4 — Penang will construct a hockey stadium that meets international standards in Bukit Mertajam next year.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the state needed its own permanent hockey stadium for the state hockey team to train.

“Penang only has one hockey field recognised by the International Hockey Federation, which is at Universiti Sains Malaysia,” he said.

He said the new stadium will be built on a 2.42ha plot at Jalan Betek in Bukit Mertajam, and that the state executive council had on November 2 last year agreed to build the new stadium on state land.

“The construction of this stadium is the state’s social obligation to develop sports in the state and it is also in recognition of the state men’s hockey team that won gold in Sukma 2016,” he said.

The stadium is expected to cost RM7.5 million and the Penang government will fund RM3.5 million, while the remainder will come from AEI International Berhad.

AEI International director Datuk Joseph Kow, who is also the Penang Hockey Association chairman, said no other parties will be involved in the construction.

“We will expedite the construction of the stadium so that it will be ready before the Penang Asia Pacific Masters Game in September next year,” he said, adding that the stadium will also be the first with live telecast facilities.

Penang has another hockey field in the Bertam Sports Complex in North Seberang Perai, but that has not been upgraded.

Lim said the Bertam Sports Complex was under the jurisdiction of the federal government through the Sports and Youth Ministry.

There are 21 hockey stadiums in Malaysia recognised by the International Hockey Federation.
