PSAS2018 : India to send second team for Sultan Azlan Shah Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Five-time champions India are only sending their second team for the 27th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh from March 3-10.

All the big names like goalkeepers P.R. Sreejesh, Akash Anil Chikte; defenders Harmanpreet Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, Birendra Lakra; midfielders Manpreet Singh, Chinglensana Singh. Kothajit Singh; forwards SV Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay and Mandeep Singh won’t be featuring in the six-nation tournament.

These top players are focusing on the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, from April 4-15 and the Asian Games in Jakarta from Aug 18-Sept 2.

Without these stars, it will be interesting to see whether India can hold their own against world No. 1 Australia and world No. 2 Argentina at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

India have included three juniors – defender Mandeep Mor and strikers Sumit Kumar and Shilanand Lakra – who will be making their debuts in the tournament.

Asian champions India will be led by experienced midfielder Sardar Singh. He missed the World League Final in Bhubaneswar, India, last December, where India won the bronze and is determined to make his mark in Ipoh.

India chief coach Sjoerd Marijne said Sardar would offer the team leadership. He has been named captain in the absence of Manpreet.

“Sardar’s an experienced player and this is an opportunity for him to show his skills,” said the Dutchman.

“As for the juniors, the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup is a great opportunity for them to get some international exposure.”

World No. 6 India open their campaign against reigning Olympic champions Argentina on March 3.

Their other matches are against world No. 7 England on March 4, world champions Australia (March 6), world No. 12 Malaysia (March 7) and world No. 10 Ireland (March 9).
